A motion tabled by Conservatives in committee seeking to produce documents related to threats by foreign actors faced by elected officials has raised concerns among Liberal and NDP MPs, who worry it could draw unwanted attention to them. The motion, tabled by Conservative MP Michael Cooper on May 18 in the House of Commons Standing Committee for Procedure and House Affairs, seeks to obtain the 2021 assessment from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service that mentions Chinese regime activities against MPs, as well as records related to the distribution of the assessment to the Privy Council Office and other departments. NDP MP Rachel Blaney expressed support for increasing accountability, but also raised concerns about protecting national security and not putting MPs who have already faced challenges in an uncomfortable position. Liberal MP Sherry Romanado echoed those concerns and the meeting was adjourned without a vote on the motion.
