South Africa’s prison authorities and a lawyer for Reeva Steenkamp’s family announced on Friday that former Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius has been denied parole. In 2013, Pistorius killed his girlfriend, Steenkamp, a model and law student in his bathroom on Valentine’s Day. Initially sentenced to a six-year term, Pistorius’ sentence was increased to 13 years after an appeal by prosecutors who deemed the punishment too lenient. The Department of Correctional Services stated that Pistorius has not completed the minimum detention period required for parole consideration. The victim’s family opposed the bid, and their lawyer expressed relief at the parole board’s decision. Pistorius, better known as “Blade Runner” for his prosthetic legs, reached the peak of his fame in 2012 at the Olympics, competing against able-bodied athletes. He claimed to have mistaken Steenkamp for an intruder when he shot her through the bathroom door.
