The township of Norwich, Ontario, recently made a decision to only allow flags for the municipality, province or country on township property, making it against the bylaw to fly any other flags. The motion was initially proposed by Councilor John Scholten, who wanted to exclude pride flags and ‘progress’ flags as well. Scholten believes that allowing flags of particular groups, organizations or ideologies will only cause division rather than unity. However, after a three-hour meeting, the motion was amended to only specify the three levels of government flags that are permitted to be flown. Members from the LGBTQ and pride community spoke at the meeting, protesting the claim that certain flags are divisive and insisting that they promote inclusion and love. Councilor Alisha Stubbs was against the motion, stating that it was demeaning, while the mayor believed that there was more support for the ban among the residents.
