British political leader Nigel Farage has alleged that his bank, which he has been with for over 40 years, has closed his accounts without offering any explanation. Farage took to Twitter to express his frustration, stating that his bank’s action is a form of “political persecution.” He emphasized that he has been given no reason for the closure and no opportunity to challenge it. Farage did not name the bank, but mentioned that he had been with a subsidiary of a major banking group. He revealed that he had approached multiple other banks in search of a new account, but none were willing to accommodate him. Farage believes that being deprived of a bank account makes a person practically nonexistent. He speculated that because he is a prominent figure associated with Brexit, certain corporate structures and individuals who opposed Brexit may be seeking retribution. He also mentioned the possibility of being designated a politically exposed person (PEP), which would increase vulnerability to corruption. Farage’s claims have not been independently verified. In a related context, other political figures, such as Richard Tice and Laurence Fox, have also faced bank account difficulties due to their views on issues such as net zero policies and corporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices. Conservative MP Sally-Ann Hart had previously proposed legislation to prevent financial services providers from withholding service based on freedom of expression, but the amendment was withdrawn.
