Google has made an announcement stating that it will remove links to Canadian news within Canada on its platforms. This decision is a direct response to the passing of Bill C-18, which mandates that tech giants compensate media outlets for the content they share online. Google’s president of global affairs, Kent Walker, expressed concerns about the law, calling it unworkable and stating that the regulatory process has not provided any reassurance regarding the resolution of structural issues within the legislation. Consequently, when the new law takes effect in December, Google will no longer include links to Canadian news in its Search, News, and Discover products, and it will also discontinue Google News Showcase in Canada. The passing of the Online News Act on June 21 further enforces the requirement for online platforms and digital news intermediaries like Google and Meta to negotiate deals with and pay Canadian media outlets for the news and information linked on their platforms. Previously, Google confirmed that Canadians would no longer have access to news on its social media sites as a result of Bill C-18.
