The UK government has announced new legislation that could see digital platforms fined heavily for failing to prevent subscription traps and online scams. The Digital Markets Unit (DMU) will gain new powers to ensure fair competition and consumer protection. Large companies with “strategic market status” in key digital services may be forced to follow specific rules or face hefty fines under the draft Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Bill. The bill will also enable the government to ban sites from facilitating fake reviews or advertising consumer reviews without verifying their authenticity. The legislation has received criticism, however, with some arguing that it could deter investment and innovation.
