Daniel Suidani, a former premier of the Solomon Islands and a vocal critic of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), was able to access donated funds for his legal defense just hours before the China Commission hearing. The GoFundMe website had allegedly withheld over $27,800 in funds, prompting the China Uncensored YouTube channel to launch a crowdfunding campaign to finance Suidani’s trip to the US and his legal battle against his removal from office. Within 24 hours, 784 donors raised $27,853, but GoFundMe refused to release the funds, claiming that it needed to review the campaign without providing any reasons. The China Democracy Fund also launched a campaign using its own secure payment system to support Suidani’s legal defense. Suidani, a Taiwan supporter, was traveling to the US to participate in a United Nations conference and raise awareness about how the CCP is taking over the Solomon Islands. A bipartisan congressional support for Suidani’s cause resulted in him obtaining a visa, but the US State Department denied his first application. However, a second attempt was supported by Congress members from both parties, and Suidani was able to secure the visa.
