Joran van der Sloot, the main suspect in Natalee Holloway’s disappearance in 2005, is being moved from the maximum-security Challapalca prison to a facility near Lima in preparation for his extradition to the US to face charges regarding the Holloway case. Peru authorized van der Sloot’s extradition to the US in May, where he faces charges of extortion and wire fraud. Once bureaucratic procedures are complete, and a medical examination is carried out, van der Sloot will be extradited to the US, estimated to take place on Tuesday. His lawyer stated that van der Sloot denies the charges. A treaty between Peru and the US allows van der Sloot to temporary extradition for one year, which can be extended for a further year. After this time, he must be returned to Peru. In 2010, van der Sloot was accused of trying to extort the Holloway family in exchange for the location of Natalee Holloway’s body, and later arrested for the murder of Stephany Flores. He agreed to extradition as he is reportedly unhappy with the conditions of Challapalca prison.
