Around 200 firefighters worked tirelessly to battle a massive fire that erupted in Mexico City’s Central de Abasto wholesale market on Thursday night. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported during the incident. The market, which is responsible for supplying various neighborhood markets, restaurants, and other areas throughout Mexico, encountered a fire in an area where wooden pallets and crates are stored. The fire spread quickly due to the windy weather, causing the flames to reach great heights. However, the firefighters managed to largely control the situation after several hours. The administration of the market released a statement late on Thursday, stating that the fire originated at around 7 pm, affecting a section of the market with 359 stands producing and selling cardboard boxes, wooden crates, and pallets. Despite the fire’s severity, the rest of the market, which covers over 800 acres in the capital’s Iztapalapa borough and is known as the world’s largest wholesale market, would continue operating normally on Friday. As per the market’s website, roughly 30% of Mexico’s food production is supplied via this market.
