The oversight board of Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has recommended a six-month suspension of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen’s social media accounts. This comes after Hun Sen posted a video in which he threatened violence against his opponents. Initially, Meta had allowed the video to remain on its platforms, citing its newsworthiness. However, the oversight board overturned this decision, stating that the harm caused by allowing the speech outweighed its public interest value. In addition to the suspension, the board ordered the removal of the post from Facebook. Meanwhile, Hun Sen has deleted his Facebook page and switched to using the Telegram messaging app and TikTok. Critics argue that Hun Sen’s actions to suppress opponents could undermine democracy in Cambodia.
