Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced that it will remove news feeds for California residents if the state passes the Journalism Preservation Act. The proposed law would require big tech companies to pay journalism usage fees to news outlets. Meta opposes the proposal and claims that publishers and broadcasters put their content on their platform themselves. The company threatened a similar response to Congress in December 2021 over the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act, which resembles the California legislation. Meta also threatened to withdraw news in Canada over similar legislation. Several opponents have stated that legislation like this creates an ill-advised antitrust exemption for publishers and broadcasters.
