Russia’s media regulator has blacklisted five media outlets connected to Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner mercenary group. The move comes after Wagner fighters attempted an insurrection by taking control of a Russian military headquarters and advancing towards Moscow. The RIA FAN news agency and four online news portals controlled by Prigozhin’s Patriot media holding company, namely “People’s News,” “Neva News,” “Politics Today,” and “Economy Today,” have had their websites blocked in Russia. There are unconfirmed reports suggesting that Prigozhin himself ordered the shutdown of Patriot. This media group, founded in 2019, includes the Internet Research Agency, also known as the “troll farm,” which has been linked to Russian interference in U.S. elections. The IRA, under Prigozhin’s control since 2009, operated under the Patriot umbrella. Ahead of the 2016 U.S. presidential election, IRA employees impersonated Americans and offered financial assistance to protest movements. Prigozhin has admitted to interfering in the 2016 election. Following the failed insurrection, Prigozhin and his fighters found refuge in Belarus with the help of the country’s president. Prigozhin’s media group encompasses numerous outlets.
