The Minns government is aiming to employ over 1000 new graduates and has recently announced that 520 new nurses and midwives will be joining the New South Wales public health system. This is a record intake, beating the previous record of 383 graduates. These frontline staff will be based in Auburn, Mount Druitt, Westmead and other services and will begin working later this year. The government has also committed to spend $97 million on study subsidies for individuals choosing a health career. This will be spread across three years and available for up to 2000 students. Health Minister Ryan Park emphasized the importance of supporting and retaining nurses, midwives and healthcare workers in lifelong careers within the health and hospital system. Meanwhile, the government is working towards hospital reform, and an advisory panel of health leaders has been appointed to determine safe staffing levels for different wards across the state. This news coincides with International Nurses Day, which is celebrated annually on the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.
