The former chief minister of the Northern Territory, Michael Gunner, has been cleared of allegations of political interference in the decision to charge a police officer with the murder of an Indigenous teenager. Former constable Zachary Rolfe was acquitted of killing Kumanjayi Walker in 2019. The NT Police Association, opposition politicians, and Rolfe’s legal team alleged that Gunner had politically interfered in the decision to arrest the former policeman. The commissioner’s report, which was tabled in parliament, found no evidence of illegality, corruption, impropriety, incompetence or negligence on the part of Gunner.
