French President Emanuel Macron has suggested that Europe should decrease its reliance on the United States, as reports circulate that some countries are “de-dollarizing.” During an interview with Politico, Macron, who was in China meeting with Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping, discussed the need for Europe to develop nuclear and renewable energy, finance its defense industry, and reduce its dependence on the US dollar. Macron believes that Europe is at risk of becoming embroiled in crises that are not its own, which would interfere with its strategic autonomy. However, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen disagrees, stating that stability in the Taiwan Strait is paramount, and any threat to change the status quo is unacceptable. The recent aggression by China towards Taiwan has caused concern, with McCarthy, US House of Representatives Speaker, warning against the use of force to bully Taiwan. Speculations regarding the possibility of the US dollar losing its position as the world’s reserve currency have intensified in recent times, as China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, and even France have all taken actions towards reducing their reliance on the USD.
