Loreen from Sweden won the Eurovision 2023 competition in Liverpool, becoming the first woman to win twice in the contest. Finland’s Käärijä came in second place despite winning the viewer vote with the song “Cha Cha Cha”. Loreen expressed her overwhelming happiness and compared her victory to coming back to a family. She is now the second person to win the contest twice after Ireland’s Johnny Logan. The contest was held in Liverpool on behalf of Ukraine, last year’s winner, who was unable to host due to Russia’s invasion. The organizers were successful in avoiding political messages during the contest. Although during the contest, Russian missiles were fired and injured two people in Ternopil, Ukraine. The Ukrainian president was not allowed to address the viewers, owing to the contest’s non-political nature. The show was infused with the spirit of Ukraine, notably in a rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone”. Germany finished bottom of the table, with Britain just behind, and no country received no points. Pam Minto, a 37-year-old support worker, hoped that her city did Ukraine proud.
