A Chinese-American artist has produced a new anime series that has gained popularity among Chinese people worldwide due to its mockery and criticism of the Chinese communist regime and its followers. The anime is set in the near future after the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has taken over the world, creating a society without freedom, including “social credit” scores, literary censorship, and extensive surveillance of citizens. It depicts the rebellion of people who refuse to accept this system and their subsequent suppression by the regime. The anime includes images from the anti-extradition movement in Hong Kong in 2019, conveying a message of solidarity with the people of Hong Kong.
The English-subtitled video received 491,000 views and 30,000 likes within a week of its release, resonating with people from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and around the world. Heartfelt comments were left under the video, with one from a mainland Chinese person expressing sorrow for the people of Hong Kong and hope for the people of Taiwan. Additionally, Dr. Song Lin, an Australian media person and Hong Kong immigrant, discussed how the anime portrays scenes of Hong Kong people being oppressed during the 2019 anti-extradition movement.
The artist who created the anime is a Chinese-American who was born and raised in Shanghai and now lives in Los Angeles as a full-time video game artist. One of the videos on the artist’s channel recounts their experience of CCP harassment and censorship in China and their subsequent escape to the United States.
Another anime uploaded to the channel called “The Life of Little Pink” humorously and satirically tells the story of Chinese young people under the rule of the CCP. This video received more than 1.3 million views and 10,000 comments in about three weeks and was widely circulated on overseas social media platforms. According to Chinese netizens, the video is relatable, reflecting the changes that the CCP has brought about in Chinese people.
