The G-7 foreign ministers, consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union, convened in Japan on April 16 to discuss the Indo-Pacific region. They called for a peaceful resolution of cross-Strait issues between China and Taiwan while opposing any attempt to alter the status quo by force. The ministers also condemned North Korea’s frequent missile launches and reaffirmed their commitment to coordinate and enforce sanctions against Russia for its ongoing war in Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron received criticism for suggesting Europe stay out of the US-China conflict over Taiwan, while the US deployed the USS Milius to the Taiwan Strait as Taiwan monitored 18 Chinese aircraft and four naval vessels near its airspace.
