A teenager has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a 14-year-old boy in London. The judge, Sarah Munro, KC, noted that the defendant, Marques Walker, had shown no remorse for the killing, evidenced by his writing of drill song lyrics whilst on remand. Walker became the first juvenile to be sentenced on television in England and Wales, following a successful legal challenge by several media outlets. The victim, Jermaine Cools, was stabbed seven times in West Croydon on 18 November 2021. At the time of the killing, Walker was on bail for two previous knife offences. He was sentenced to be detained for a minimum of 19 years and also received a concurrent sentence for an attack on a fellow inmate which left the man with brain damage. Walker has a history of involvement in a county lines drug gang and had written lyrics to a drill song while on remand which referred to him stabbing someone on the ground.
