Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has assured the public that the recent government relief for low-income Aussies will not contribute to inflation, despite opposition warnings. The $14.6 billion living cost package outlined in the 2023-2024 federal budget includes measures like increasing the base rate for JobSeeker and other support payments by $40 a fortnight, allowing eligible parents to continue receiving support for another six years, and a 15% lift to the maximum rates of Commonwealth Rent Assistance. Albanese defended the budget, emphasizing that it was a responsible budget that aimed to deliver a stronger economy and provide support for those most in need. On the other hand, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton warned that the budget could prompt the Reserve Bank to raise interest rates, which would be a double whammy for Australian families who are already struggling.
