Elections Canada will be making significant changes to the federal election map in Canada, according to Chief Electoral Officer Stéphane Perrault. The changes will involve redistributing the boundaries of several federal ridings, resulting in Toronto losing one seat while Alberta and British Columbia will gain three and one, respectively. Perrault stated that a new representation order with a revised map of federal boundaries is expected to be proclaimed in early autumn, allowing Elections Canada seven months to prepare for the next general election using the new boundaries. If a federal snap election is called before the seven months elapse, it will utilise the old map. Perrault acknowledged that redistributing House of Commons seats would create difficulties for political parties and MPs. However, Elections Canada plans to support them in realigning themselves with the new boundaries. Additionally, Elections Canada will introduce a pilot plan for electronic voting lists in federal elections, enabling voters to submit their ballots remotely from any location.
