Green Party leader Elizabeth May recently revealed that she has suffered a stroke, which was initially believed to be the result of fatigue and stress. In an interview with The Globe and Mail, she stated that she has not experienced any long-term neurological effects and will be taking some time to rest. Initially, her husband attributed her condition to overwork and stress. May, who has served as the MP for Saanich-Gulf Islands since 2011, was hospitalized and observed at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital in British Columbia. Her husband criticized the demanding schedule and workload placed on parliamentarians, suggesting that it would be seen as unacceptable in any other workplace. May’s stroke came as a surprise, as she had not previously experienced any severe headaches or high blood pressure. Despite her health issue, she intends to continue her role as Green Party leader. May expressed her hope that her health would not be used to undermine her political career and emphasized the importance of recognizing the toll that high workloads can have on individuals’ health.
