Five bodies were recovered on Sunday from a tunnel in central South Korea that had been submerged by heavy rains, bringing the total death toll from the recent torrential downpours to 31. The victims were found inside a bus that had been trapped in a flooded underpass in Cheongju. Search operations began early on Sunday and it is anticipated that more individuals may still be trapped. The Ministry of Interior and Safety reported earlier that 26 people had died and 10 were missing as a result of landslides and floods across the country. The ministry’s data did not include the casualties from the flooded tunnel, as the number of trapped individuals and vehicles was not immediately known. President Yoon Suk Yeol has instructed Prime Minister Han Duck-soo to utilize all available resources to minimize further casualties, as more heavy rain is expected on Sunday.
