At least 17 people were killed and 29 others were injured on a highway in southwestern Egypt when a passenger bus collided with a moving truck on Wednesday evening. The accident occurred in New Valley province and 26 ambulances were sent to the scene to transport victims to nearby hospitals and morgues. It is unclear if anyone outside of the bus was hurt or killed, and the cause of the crash was not explained by authorities. According to an unnamed official cited in the local daily el-Shorouk, the bus hit the truck, which was “nearly parked” on the road. Unfortunately, Egypt has a poor transportation safety record and lethal traffic accidents like this one claim thousands of lives yearly. These incidents are typically caused by speeding, bad roads, or poor enforcement of traffic laws.
