A government manufacturing fund worth $15 billion (US$9.97 billion) could be delayed as the government seeks support to push through its flagship investment. Negotiations have continued, with the government pressuring independent senators David Pocock and Tammy Tyrrell to support the legislation, as the crossbench holds the decisive votes. There is opposition to the fund from the coalition, leading to its blocking. The Greens have signed up to the legislation, after being given assurances that the money will not directly finance coal or gas projects, or logging of native forests. However, the Jacqui Lambie Network senator is proposing an additional amendment to ensure companies that engage in native logging are eligible for investment. Independent senator Pocock is advocating for start-ups to have better access to the fund. The legislative logjam comes as the government, which is in danger of losing power at the next election, seeks to pass cornerstone legislation, including a housing fund and climate policy.
