West Lindsey District Council and Essex’s Braintree District Council have both launched legal action to prevent the Home Office’s plans to house single adult male asylum seekers in RAF Scampton and RAF Wethersfield Airfield, respectively. West Lindsey District Council has noted concerns that RAF Scampton is unsuitable for asylum seekers and may hinder a £300m regeneration program. The council has also emphasized that there are significant barriers to using the site, including contamination from previous uses which would require remediation before it could house asylum seekers. Braintree District Council has also applied for an injunction to prevent asylum seekers from being housed at RAF Wethersfield. The Home Office has yet to respond to these legal actions but has confirmed plans to use the sites, with RAF Scampton housing 200 initially and increasing capacity to 2,000 over time, and RAF Wethersfield housing 200 initially and increasing capacity to 1,700.
