Andrew Scheer, the House Leader of the Conservative Party, has requested an emergency debate in the Canadian House of Commons after reports emerged of Beijing issuing threats against the family members of a Conservative MP living in Hong Kong. Scheer alleges that the Trudeau government was aware of the threats, but failed to take action. The Globe and Mail reported on 1 May that the Chinese Communist Party views Canada as a “high priority target” and has carried out covert interference activities such as targeting Canadian MPs who called for action against the treatment of the Uyghur minority, including seeking information on one MP’s relatives in China. Scheer claims that Beijing’s intimidation tactics are being used against many Canadians of Chinese descent. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has responded to the reports, calling them “absolutely unacceptable”, and will be investigating the issue.
