Indi Gregory, an eight-month-old baby who had been diagnosed with a rare, incurable mitochondrial disease, passed away early Monday morning after battling to prevent the removal of her life support. The family, represented by Christian Concern, expressed their anger and heartbreak as Indi was transferred to a hospice under police and security escort from the Queens Medical Center in Nottingham. In a statement released by Indi’s father, he emphasized their loss and the lack of dignity in her final moments. He expressed that even though Indi’s body and dignity were taken from them, they can never take her soul.
The family was distraught that their precious child was unable to spend her last moments in the home where she belonged. Indi’s father expressed how NHS and the Courts not only deprived her of more time but also took away her dignity as she passed away. Lord Justice Peter Jackson, Lady Justice Eleanor King, and Lord Justice Andrew Moylan denied Indi’s parents’ request to take her home before her life support was removed. Although the judge tried to be compassionate, Indi’s parents continued to fight for her right to receive care. This case has sparked debate about what is in the “best interest” of a person and raises questions about the right to life.
