At the Major Economies Forum on energy and climate change on April 20, US President Joe Biden will propose a global collective target of higher zero-emission vehicle sales in major economies by 2030, according to senior officials. The target is for over 50% of light-duty vehicles and at least 30% of medium and heavy-duty vehicles sold globally to be zero-emission vehicles. The EPA’s new tailpipe emissions standards expectation for the US is for two-thirds of new light-duty vehicles sold to be electric by 2032, while the target includes all vehicle classes with medium and heavy-duty vehicles being significant sources of emissions in many major emerging economies. Other agenda items for the summit include a zero-emissions goal from global shipping by the middle of this century and Biden’s $11.4 billion promise to international climate aid by 2024, for which the administration is considering new and creative authorities.
