Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese voiced his country’s support for the G7 leaders’ joint statement against China’s use of force and coercion in asserting its disputed claims in the Indo-Pacific region. While attending the G7 summit and Quad meeting in Japan, Albanese emphasized the need for enhanced peace, security and stability in the region. He further stated Australia’s support for the status quo in the Taiwan Straits and its opposition to Beijing’s militarization and maritime claims in the South China Sea. Additionally, the Quad partnership announced initiatives to strengthen underwater sea cable networks and expand telecom networks. The countries also pledged support for health initiatives, renewable energy and climate change mitigation. The move from G7 and Quad, nevertheless, comes amidst China’s resuming importation of Australian timber after trade sanctions in response to Australia’s 5G infrastructure bans and inquiry into the origins of COVID-19.
