The Australian government has cancelled applications for two coal mine projects in Queensland due to a lack of necessary environmental credentials and impact assessments. The China Stone Coal Mine project and The Range Coal project were cancelled after the developers, MacMines Austasia and Stanmore Resources respectively, failed to provide information on environmental impacts, such as the potential impact on water resources and threatened animal species. While both projects can reapply, Australian Conservation Foundation Chief Executive Kelly O’Shanassy has called for a strong, independent environmental protection agency to make assessments and decisions. The cancellations follow Plibersek’s cancellation of three other coal mine projects under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act 1999.
