The Australian government plans to cancel a new diplomatic lease for the Russian embassy near Parliament House in Canberra due to national security concerns. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made the announcement during a press conference on June 15, stating that the government had received clear security advice regarding the risks associated with Russia’s new facility near the Convention House. The legislation introduced on that same day is expected to pass both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Albanese clarified that Russia’s existing embassy in Griffith, Canberra, will not be affected and can continue to operate. Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil emphasized that the main issue with the proposed second embassy was its location next to Parliament House, which posed a threat to national security. The Prime Minister also condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and expressed support for the country, emphasizing the importance of international law and national sovereignty. He refuted criticism that Australia was not doing enough to help Ukraine, highlighting the ongoing support provided, including financial aid and military training. The Australian government has imposed financial sanctions and travel bans on several individuals and entities involved in prolonging and financing the war in Ukraine.
