To address the issue of high attrition rates in Australia’s Defence Force (ADF), the government is offering a $50,000 bonus to permanent members who have completed four years of service and agree to extend their military term by three years. The initiative aims to curb the loss of 5,000-6,000 individuals or 10% of ADF’s personnel each year, which has become more pressing due to the rising tensions and possible conflicts in the Indo-Pacific region. The Continuation Bonus is expected to affect 3,400 individuals and will cost around $400 million. The ADF’s workforce comprises around 85,000 individuals. The government has committed to improving support to the ADF’s members and their families regarding housing stress, according to Assistant Defence Minister Matt Thislewaite. To stem personnel issues, Australian MPs are proposing adopting the “foreign legions” concept and linking military recruitment to visa pathways to streamline lateral transfer from countries such as the US and UK.
