During a sudden COVID-19 lockdown in public housing towers in Melbourne in 2020, thousands of residents are now eligible for $5 million in compensation.
The Victorian Government has come to a settlement in a class action regarding measures that were enforced to stop the virus from spreading in nine towers during the peak of the second wave.
Plaintiffs insisted that residents were confined for up to 14 days and threatened with physical harm if they attempted to leave the premises. Despite this, the government refuted the claims according to legal documents.
The Department of Health’s website was updated last week to announce the settlement, although it still requires the Supreme Court’s approval.
