The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is closely monitoring the situation after it was discovered that strawberries in the US have been linked to a hepatitis A outbreak. There are currently no recalls of strawberries in Canada, but the CFIA is liaising with US authorities and will issue a recall of affected products as necessary. The recall in the US concerns Kirkland brand organic frozen whole strawberries, sold in four-pound bags by Costco in Los Angeles, Hawaii, and in two Costco business centre locations in San Diego. The strawberries originated from certain farms in Baja California, Mexico, and the strain of hepatitis A identified is genetically identical to the strain that caused an outbreak of hepatitis A infections in Canada and the United States in 2022. Hepatitis A is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus, which is most commonly spread through contaminated food or water. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may last for up to nine months.
