Academics for Academic Freedom (AFAF), a group that has been documenting restrictions on free speech in universities for almost 20 years, has released a list of the universities that have had the most “chilling effect” on free speech. Their analysis of The Banned List, a compilation of academics and others who have faced censorship attempts or bans, shows that since 2006, 97 incidents have been recorded in 43 universities in the UK and Ireland. The top five universities with the most incidents have had 49.48% of the total, with the University of Cambridge being the “worst offender” with eight incidents, followed by the University of Bristol with seven. Despite many student unions implementing hard-line approaches to protect their students from freedom of thought on campus, some universities have been defending academic freedom and freedom of debate on campus. Professor Dennis Hayes, President of AFAF, said a new elite has emerged in society that promotes “woke” policies through censorship.
