Four news photographers were wounded in the city of Chilpancingo, Mexico. It is unclear who was responsible for the attack, but the prosecutors are considering it attempted murder. The photographers work for local news outlets and were attacked as they were returning from covering an event near the local army barracks.
This attack came just days after three journalists were abducted and held in Taxo, also in Guerrero state. They were later released, but the motive for their abduction remains unknown. Guerrero has been the scene of deadly turf battles between various drug gangs and cartels.
This is one of the largest attacks on journalists in Mexico since 2012 when three news photographers were found dead in plastic bags in Veracruz. Earlier this month, a photographer in Ciudad Juarez was also killed, marking the fifth instance of a journalist being killed in Mexico in 2023. In the past five years, at least 54 journalists have been killed in Mexico.
