Four people were killed in an accident at the Sobieski coal mine in Jaworzno, southern Poland, according to the State Mining Office (WUG) spokesperson Anna Swiniarska-Tadla. She mentioned that a rescue operation was underway at the mine at the time of the most recent information, which was at 1700 GMT.
The incident occurred when a pipe burst, as a team of six workers was flushing it out, stated Piotr Strzoda from WUG. He reported that three people died on the spot as a result of the pipe bursting, which took place at 1430 GMT. According to a statement from the WUG, they received information that the fourth person had died at 1710 GMT.
The Sobieski mine is owned by energy company Tauron, but their press office could not immediately be reached for comment outside office hours. This accident is part of a series of recent incidents at mines around the world because several related stories have been making headlines.
