The leading Republican presidential candidates agree that the United States should not accept any Gazan refugees, but they differ in their views on how they perceive these individuals. The disagreement between the candidates escalated after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley traded arguments over the issue. DeSantis stated at a town hall event that the U.S. should not accept Gazans as refugees because of their anti-Semitic beliefs and lack of support for Israel’s right to exist. Conversely, Haley believes that civilians should be distinguished from terrorists and that the U.S. has historically shown sympathy towards those wanting to be free from terrorist rule. Other candidates, such as Senator Tim Scott and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, also expressed their views on accepting Gaza refugees. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump outlined a detailed plan for ideological screening of immigrants upon his return to the White House, vowing not to accept individuals from Gaza or other countries that pose security threats.
