According to the Treasury Department, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will be visiting India this week to attend the Group of 20 (G20) finance ministers’ meetings before heading to Vietnam for bilateral talks. Yellen’s visit to India is scheduled from July 13 to 21, where she will participate in the G20 meetings and emphasize the need for progress on global challenges, such as debt and the development of multilateral development banks. She will also advocate for collective efforts on debt sustainability, especially for low-income countries in distress. Yellen is set to have bilateral discussions with Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and European Commissioner for Economy Paolo Gentiloni. The department stated that Yellen’s participation in the G20 summit will strengthen the relationship between the United States and India, as President Joe Biden has referred to India as an indispensable partner. In Vietnam, Yellen will meet with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Finance Minister Ho Duc Phoc, and other finance officials to discuss further collaborations, particularly related to supply chains and clean energy transition. The department mentioned that the United States has committed significant investments to support Vietnam’s energy transition. This visit follows Yellen’s recent trip to China, where she aimed to stabilize relations and enhance communication on global macroeconomy and financial matters. Yellen has expressed the desire for a healthy relationship with China and emphasized cooperation on urgent global challenges, including climate change and debt distress. Additionally, Yellen’s trip aligns with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent state visit to the United States, which focused on strengthening defense and technological cooperation between the two countries. The United States is India’s largest trading partner, and bilateral trade between the two nations has increased significantly. Vietnam has also become a key destination for investments from electronics giants, serving as a major production hub for smartphones, computers, and cameras.
