U.S. military assistance is “on the way” to Israel, according to National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby. He stated that the first tranche of security assistance, in response to recent terrorist attacks, is already en route to Israel. While it has not yet arrived, Kirby assured reporters that it is making its way there. He did not provide specific details about the equipment being sent.
Kirby explained that the administration anticipates additional requests for security systems from Israel as they continue to use munitions in the conflict. The U.S. government promises to support Israel and fulfill their needs as quickly as possible. He also clarified that there are currently no efforts to solicit additional assistance from Congress for Israel.
Currently, the United States provides $3.8 billion in annual assistance to Israel, with the majority of it being allocated for military aid. Kirby’s announcement comes amidst a deadly conflict that has resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths. The conflict began on October 7 when Hamas, designated as a terrorist group by the U.S., launched rockets from Gaza and invaded Israel with at least 1,000 terrorists. In response, Israel has declared war and initiated strikes on Gaza.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant declared a “complete siege” on the Gaza Strip, planning to cut off electricity and restrict the entry of food and fuel. Infrastructure Minister Israel Katz ordered the cutoff of water supplies to Hamas-controlled Gaza. Meanwhile, the Pentagon has adjusted its Middle East posture by deploying the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group closer to the Israeli coast and augmenting fighter aircraft squadrons in the region.
There is currently uncertainty about the number of Americans involved in the conflict. President Joe Biden confirmed that at least 11 Americans have been killed. He expressed concern for the families affected and acknowledged that some American citizens may be held by Hamas. The exact number of missing U.S. citizens is unknown, as it continues to fluctuate. The State Department is working closely with Israeli officials to locate missing individuals and is providing support to affected families.
To show solidarity with Israel, the White House will be illuminated in blue and white on the night of October 9.
