The Victorian Liberal Party’s situation has worsened, with conservative MP Moira Deeming’s suspension and subsequent expulsion causing further disarray. The leader of the opposition, John Pesutto, had suspended Deeming for nine months for speaking at a rally hijacked by neo-Nazis to save face, but infighting among party members has caused an escalation, with leaked meeting minutes and legal threats creating a farcical situation. Despite her expulsion from the parliamentary party, Deeming remains a member of the Victorian division, allowing her to promote her message more broadly and potentially engender support. The Liberal Party in Victoria must return to its fundamental values of freedom of speech, religion, and association to avoid shedding voters and supporters to other parties. The current post-values world and focus on defeating internal opponents rather than defeating the Labor Party and winning government has caused a lack of goodwill and compromise necessary for workable peace in the party. Unless trust and goodwill can be restored through a plan, the ongoing division will prevail.
