Embattled Senator David Van is set to leave parliament after resigning from the Liberal Party amidst allegations of sexual harassment. Senator Lidia Thorpe and former Senator Amanda Stoker accused him of inappropriate touching. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton revealed that another individual also accused Van of sexual harassment. Dutton called for Van to quit parliament, but before the allegations could be discussed by a committee, the senator chose to resign from the party. In a letter to Victorian Liberal Party president Greg Mirabella, Van criticized the party for disregarding due process and natural justice. He denied the accusations against him and expressed his distress at not being given procedural fairness. Labor and Nationals MPs supported Dutton’s decision to expel Van from the party. Van will now sit as an independent in the Senate.
