Victoria is set to introduce digital driver’s licences that can be carried on motorists’ phones. A trial will take place in Ballarat from June for six months before a statewide rollout is planned for 2024. Full licence holders in Ballarat will be able to register for the pilot programme via the Service Victoria or VicRoads website, with the option of storing a digital version in either the Service Victoria app or the newly launched myVicRoads app. The digital card will include benefits such as real-time updates of home addresses and the ability to check if the licence has been suspended or cancelled. The trial hopes to receive feedback from a range of organisations, including Victoria Police, before a full launch in 2024. Other Australian states, including South Australia and New South Wales, have already introduced digital licences.
