The State Department of the United States has confirmed that it is carrying out the first ever mass evacuation of American citizens from Sudan. The move comes as a result of fighting between rival factions, which began in early April. A US-government backed convoy arrived at Port Sudan on Saturday, which is situated near the Red Sea and hundreds of miles away from the capital, Khartoum. According to a statement made by the State Department, the evacuation was triggered after negotiations with the support of regional and international partners. The US Department of Defense has provided assistance and is focused on helping as many American citizens as possible depart the country safely. The conflict has led to the deaths of hundreds of people and has caused significant damage. In addition, the fighting has raised concerns about the establishment of a democratic government in the country which has been ongoing since the toppling of former President Omar Hassan al-Bashir in 2019.
