The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) has released a statement condemning the Chinese regime’s practice of forced organ harvesting and urging U.S. authorities and doctors to take action. The AAPS states that there is “overwhelming evidence” that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has been systematically incarcerating and harvesting organs from religious, ethnic, and other minority groups in China. The group calls on the U.S. government and American physicians to stop training or educating medical professionals from China or any totalitarian regime that could be involved in such abuses. Dr. Richard Amerling, a board member of AAPS, describes forced organ harvesting as “absolutely barbaric, inhumane, unethical,” and emphasizes the need for a forceful response from the medical establishment. The China Tribunal, an independent expert panel, has also concluded that forced organ harvesting has been taking place in China on a significant scale for years, primarily targeting Falun Gong practitioners and other persecuted minorities. Dr. Amerling suggests that medical societies should publicly condemn these abuses and exclude Chinese personnel from participating in the American medical system. The International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation has already taken steps to ban research papers involving organs or tissue from human donors in China. The CCP profits from forced organ harvesting, and it is estimated that tens of thousands of transplants take place in China each year, sourced mainly from prisoners of conscience. Dr. Amerling calls on the U.S. government to use its power to help end this practice and urges a national policy banning the U.S. training of Chinese physicians. However, challenges remain due to the CCP’s influence within U.S. institutions through donations and grants. Efforts to counter forced organ harvesting have been made by American lawmakers, including the introduction of the Falun Gong Protection Act and the passage of the Stop Forced Organ Harvesting Act. Dr. Amerling applauds these legislative responses and calls on others to join AAPS in taking a stand against forced organ harvesting.
