The British Ministry of Defence has stated that a rebellion led by the Wagner group in Russia is the most significant challenge to the state in recent times. The ministry reported that there is limited evidence of resistance against the rebel paramilitary group and that the loyalty of Russia’s security forces will be crucial in determining the outcome. Wagner is believed to have occupied key security sites in Rostov-on-Don and is moving towards Moscow. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has expressed concern and will be discussing the situation with allies. The rebellion is seen as an opportunity for Ukraine. Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin has accused military leaders of targeting his group and claimed that his soldiers were killed in an attack. Prigozhin has taken control of military installations in Rostov-on-Don and threatened to move towards Moscow unless negotiations take place. Russia’s defence ministry has denied the accusations and the Federal Security Service has opened a case into the rebellion. President Vladimir Putin has called the rebellion treason and betrayal, promising punishment for those involved. Prigozhin has disputed Putin’s allegations and stated that his group is patriotic.
