Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre engaged in a heated debate regarding the increasing rates of violent crime in Canada. Poilievre held Liberal policies accountable for the rise in crime, while Trudeau attributed it to the Tory opposition to government gun control measures. Poilievre highlighted a recent fatal stabbing in a Vancouver Starbucks while citing a 32% increase in violent crime since 2015 when Trudeau took office. Trudeau countered by stating that his government has taken steps towards prohibiting guns and promoting overall public safety through Bill C-21. Poilievre criticized the proposed gun control bill as it targets “law-abiding citizens” and alleged that the Liberal government allows repeat violent offenders back on the street through their bail system policies. Justice Minister David Lametti stated that the Liberal government will be implementing a “targeted reform” of Canada’s bail system. The government has been under pressure to reform the bail system from opposition parties, provincial governments, and regional police chiefs after the murder of Ontario Provincial Police Constable Greg Pierzchala by a repeat offender who was out on bail.
