Mermaids, a transgender lobby group, has been unsuccessful in its attempt to remove the LGB Alliance’s charitable status. The LGB Alliance, which advocates for the rights of lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals based on sex rather than gender, had received charitable status from the Charity Commission in 2021. This ruling marks the first case of its kind in the UK. Mermaids had support from various lobby groups in their endeavor, but the tribunal ultimately found in favor of the LGB Alliance. Mermaids claimed that the LGB Alliance should not be recognized as a charity due to its supposed focus on anti-trans activism rather than promoting LGBTQ+ rights. The two-judge panel at the General Regulatory Chamber dismissed the appeal, stating that Mermaids is not permitted to challenge the Charity Commission’s decision. The LGB Alliance expressed their satisfaction with the outcome on Twitter. Mermaids is considering whether to appeal the decision.
