Toronto ranked sixth in a global ranking of poor air quality and pollution in cities, according to the IQ Air Quality Index. The city experienced unhealthy air due to smoke from forest fires in northeastern Ontario and Quebec. At one point, Toronto was even named the worst city in the world for air quality. Environment Canada issued a warning about the deteriorated air quality and advised certain individuals to limit their outdoor activities and protect themselves from the smoke. In response to the air quality, the city of Toronto made changes to programming, suspending outdoor activities and moving certain programs indoors. The air quality in Toronto improved slightly as the day progressed, but other cities like Chicago, Dubai, and Delhi still had higher rankings. The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre reported that a significant portion of Canadian land, including forests, had burned due to wildfires. Smoke from these wildfires even reached Western Europe. Environment Canada emphasized the serious health risks posed by the fine particles in the smoke, particularly for vulnerable groups.
